CARSAFE Is An Independent Publication For Car Owners Who’d Rather Not Have Their Cars Stolen Or Damaged.

  • The carsafe.com.au domain was previously operated by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC).
  • For over two decades, NMVTRC ran Australia’s dedicated vehicle theft data program. The Council shut down in 2021 after the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) pulled its funding. Its data program ended with it, and this website went dark.
  • This site is what came next. CARSAFE relaunched in 2026 under new, independent ownership as something different. We’re not a Council or a government program – we’re a consumer publication.
  • Our mission is to educate Australian car owners about the risks associated with vehicle theft and accidents. We believe the gap the NMVTRC program left is real. Since it closed, no agency or publication filled it.
  • Meanwhile, motorcycle theft has vanished from the national statistics entirely, and the information Australians can find about vehicle crime is scattered across state agencies, insurer press releases and marketing blogs of wildly uneven quality.

Who We Answer To

No car insurer, manufacturer, car security vendor or Australian government body gets to provide input into what we publish. CARSAFE is not affiliated with the former National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council or any government agency.
